Question by vivalarosa · Jun 30, 2011 at 08:43 AM · windowsmaclicense

iOS development - can i use a friends / university mac with my license?

Hey, I'm new to iOS development - I looked at the documentation and it said it was fine to use my license on 2 computers (pc and mac allowed), i develop on PC and havn't bought a mac. I was wondering if it was okay for me to develop on my pc and then install unity onto a university mac, build and then uninstall unity (rinse and repeat through development).

On that note, do i need a personal mac to publish to the app store ?

Thanks in advance :)

Good question, I'm in the same boat. I'm a PC user and would prefer not to clutter my room with an extra computer just to meet requirements if it's not required. I think it should be fine if you consider it as "I'm developing a PC game and porting to iOS" even if you never release the PC version. Personally I'm targetting Android since it's cheaper to get setup since you don't need a mac. I plan to port to iOS in the future, don't know if I'll need to buy my own mac or not.

The develop on a PC and port to iOS massively underestimates the effort required. iOS has a very different user interface to the PC, and different GPU characteristics.

The EULA says that must be the sole user of the serial. I think that legally you will be able to do what you want. However, the Uni might not allow you to install your own software on their machines, so you should check with them first. Also, bear in mind that you'll want to test your game on lots of devices. If you have the money to buy the various iPhones, iPods and iPads to test on a mac mini is probably a good investment too. If you expect to make any money from your iOS app, then buy the kit you need. Seems strange to tie your Unity iOS development to a computer you don't own and to a university machine that might be used by a history student when you want access to it.

Thanks for the reply Graham,

The uni computers get wiped every time you log out, so I would have to reinstall unity every time, perhaps on different mac's each time.

$$anonymous$$y major concern is that if im constantly using my serial and then removing it from the mac, that my serial would stay "used" so I couldn't keep doing this process.

As a student buying a $$anonymous$$ac really isn't in my budget, even a $$anonymous$$ac $$anonymous$$ini is too pricey for me.

Thanks again, hopefully I don't hit any speed bumps.

If the mac gets wiped each time, and you install on a new machine you will immediately run into the 2-activations-per-serial limit.
