how to get an apk to install without play store.
I want to make it easy for someone to go to a website and click on a download link on their phone and the apk will install automatically. With the fortnite lawsuit still going on i need to find an alternative. I dont want a someone who isnt well versed in their phone to have to jump through a million hoops just to install the apk

Hi, You need to set up your mobile into developer mode. Methodology depends of your devices so check in the web ! Then allows usb transfer and unknown app source installation (something like that). Connect your mobile to your computer to proceed the transfer and then launch the .apk file.
But if you want other people to access your .apk without this procedure you need to use the appstore/play store and pay for this. The fact that you access easily in the play store is because the providers are verified and play store assure that its safe app without malwares.
Note that activating developer mode is pretty much the same on all android devices. Just tap the build-number on the about page 7 times. In the newly menu point "developer options" you can allow installing "untrusted" apks. Once that's done you can simply "open" any apk file on the phone and it will start the installation.
Actually when I worked for a games company that was our default solution to update the build because it was way faster than using the build and run command. We build the apk directly into the dropdox folder and used a filemanager with dropbox support on the phone. So we click build in Unity and when finished, wait 2 sec and just open the apk directly from the dropbox folder. It worked perfectly. The build-and-run was extremely slow pushing the apk through the adb interface over usb. Though this was already several years ago, so things may have changed.
I completely agree, and no it's always the same now.

So no other way than the playstore? My app will link to an online store. They dont allow that from what happened with fortnite
