Question by xEnOnn · Mar 07, 2013 at 02:24 PM · cameraterrainrpg

What is a reasonable size for a terrain in a top-down RPG?

I'm working on an rpg game with a top-down view, like how the view is like in DOTA. I'm not sure what would be a good size for my terrain. I had them at 1000x1000 just so that my camera could see enough of a part of the terrain. I got a model from the asset store, but it looks extremely small on that 1000x1000 terrain. The camera's height watching over the huge terrain makes the model almost invisible to the eyes.

When I size down the terrain to about 100x100, and lower my camera to see part of the smaller terrain, the whole view looks like the camera is too close to the ground. Even the texture on the ground starts to get stretched and a little blurry.

Usually, what is a reasonable resolution for a terrain for something like a RPG game?

I quite appreciate you try to make a copy of DotA, me myself being a player of STEAM - DOTA 2...

Now, according to me, I broke down or decompiled DOTA to see how its made, you should size your terrain in a reasonable 512x512...

It should be minimum 450x450, looking as to you wanna make an RPG

Looking forward to your new game,
