Question by Sockeater · Jan 27, 2016 at 03:09 PM · reflectionskyboxcubemap

Why are my Smooth Textures Reflecting Blank Cubemap

I have a very basic scene with blank textures setup When the default unity skybox is applied I notice there are reflections on the wall of what looks to be a blank cube map, the material of the wall and ceiling are set to completely smooth and should have a matte look to them.

Figure 1: Unity default skybox is set, Walls and ceiling are reflecting a blank cube map despite smooth materials alt text Figure 2: Skybox is removed and desired matte look is achieved alt text

Is there any way to fix this as I want to have skybox reflections a part of this scene with smooth materials. currently both smooth and shiny materials look shiny.

Have you tried adding a light probe to the center of the room? At least then it would be using a cubemap from inside of the room ins$$anonymous$$d of the skybox, so it should be significantly less noticeable.

hi thanks for the response

I've tried adding a light probe with no change also I've also tried setting up a reflection probe in the scene but smooth textures still reflect the empty cubemap and shiny textures will reflect the whats in the probe

Alternatively, why not set the Smoothness of the ceiling and wall materials to 0 if you want a matte look? That way you won't get that specular highlight that you don't want (that's why you set the Smoothness so high isn't it?), the reflections will be almost non existent and it'll give you a more physically accurate look. No matter what you do, higher the material's Smoothness, lesser the reflections are blurred and more pro$$anonymous$$ent the reflections are.
