Question by Jessy · Feb 03, 2011 at 09:28 PM · metaunityanswers-site-specific

Answer auto-selected for a question with a bounty?!

Hey, several people gave me good information, and I think that the answer is no, but no Unity developer came by and gave me a concrete "no". And Jashan was helpful, but not really more so than PeterG and Bunny83, who just commented and didn't answer. (Really, no offense at all to Jashan, but everyone had something good to contribute.)

Why did it get auto-answered? I do not approve this! Is that just how it is? When there is an answer for a question with a bounty, the question has to be marked answered?

If a bounty question is not accepted within a week, the highest voted answer is automatically accepted. Sorry!

From the FAQ:

Once initiated, the bounty period lasts seven days. If you mark an accepted answer, your bounty is awarded to the answerer (do note that accepted bounty answers are permanent and cannot be changed). If you do not accept an answer in seven days, the top voted answer will automatically become the accepted answer, and half your bounty will be awarded to that answer. You will always give up the amount of reputation specified in the bounty, so if you start a bounty, be sure to follow up and accept the best answer!

I'm inclined to agree. What if nobody has sufficiently answered your question in a week? Someone gets credit for not answering the question, and people looking for the solution in the future are misguided into finding the "answered" question, only to discover it isn't actually answered? I do think it should be changed.

I think it is sufficient disincentive to prevent spam$$anonymous$$g bounty questions. You shouldn't be able to post them with out losing any rep. Generally people will go to great lengths to answer the bounty questions.

you can unmark it after the week is passed so people can give better answers, but this is done so people get their bounty and prevent them from doing the "well, you fixed this problem, but I still need help with THIS one"
