Question by Elenesski · Mar 12, 2015 at 07:22 PM · windowsosx

Are there statistics of who develops on OSX with unity vs. Windows?

I'm thinking about releasing an asset onto the store with two versions. The Basic version is doesn't care which platform you're on, as it's all C# class code, but the more advanced version is dependent on a modelling tool that only operates on Windows; it generates some C# code. You don't need the modeller after you generate C# from it. But it's iterative; as you develop the game, you reuse the modeller to expand your model, generate more code, write more game, and so on.

Are there statistics out there that tell you how many developers are using the Mac version vs. the Windows version of Unity? ((Assuming they don't have access to a Windows PC or are using a Windows VM)).

I was going to say that people jealousy guard their stats, never releasing them ever. But this is an odd one.

On the one hand, Unity doesn't want competitors to know it may be weak on some platform, or most of the money is in platform X. On the other hand, this may be common knowledge. On the gripping hand, Unity may not want to encourage platform-specific addons.

$$anonymous$$y solution isn't platform specific per se, it's just the modelling tool is Windows-only. The actual generator uses a GoF Bridge to convert the $$anonymous$$odelling tool's project file to a different format prior to generation; and I wrote that bridge in a few days. I took that strategy so that other tools could be bridged into the generator.

I imagine that if there are OSX users using other modelling tools without some kind of Windows V$$anonymous$$, they could write a similar bridge quickly too.

I'm pretty sure the stats-page of Unity has all the information you want to know.

Does it? That link does nothing for me :(

Interesting ... 11% for OSX users. I expected it to be higher.

Well...that's downloads, free and pro, and includes all the curious who used it for a few weeks, or multiple installs. Lot of froth. It probably reflects percentage of $$anonymous$$acs in the general population more than anything else. 11% is high, in that case.

I feel there is a misunderstanding, or I misunderstand. The stat page tells how much of each platform is used per device, that amount of iOS on mobile, that amount of Linux on standalone and so on.

I think what is expected here is where those made with $$anonymous$$ac or Windows or Linux since he wants the develop platform.

I'm looking at EditorStats-EditorHardWareStats.

The main page says each Unity game download sends back hardware data. I assume that Editor downloads work the same way. So the EditorStats page is merely counting the number of Unity3D game engine downloads?
