How to save TerrainData for later use?

I created a terrain generator that works on runtime. It builds more TerrainData that is applied to the terrain when the user gets close to the edge. My problem is how to save the TerrainData so that when the player returns to places that were already generated the whole generation to not take place again and just load the data from the previous session. Also the player may lower or higher the terain through certain actions.

I would like to know how this terrainData may be saved. Is it possible to draw heightMap texutres and save and load those?
