Question by George Profenza · Oct 08, 2010 at 09:21 PM · augmented-realityosx

How does AR and Unity work in this examples ?

I've just seen the Honey Nut Cheerios AR game by Boffswana thanks to the the Press Release on the Unity website.

I was wondering how they've got AR with Unity. I've seen this question and I don't know if it's UnityAR or something else.

Any ideas how they achieved that?

As far as i know it is not unity's AR. These are external plugins that they get a video feed from your camera, they "scan" an object from this video feed with the help of something precisely printed on the object, and then they translate the movement of the feed to unity's input functions. There must be some out of the box middleware considering how often you see these things today(not for unity but in general ) but i don't know any names . If i see my kid waving a cheerios box in front of the screen i will be quite puzzled !

The Cheerios AR was done through source licensing Unity and implementing by themself. This functionality is not available to anyone but them actually.

Unity has no integrated AR, but for Android they partnered with Qualcomm to have the Qualcomm AR (available on asset store for free)
