Question by ibyte · Dec 09, 2009 at 03:37 PM · metaunityanswers-site-specific

If a question gets an accepted answer should the question not automatically get at least one vote?

As per the subject - If a question gets an accepted answer should the question not automatically get at least one vote?

EDIT: Sorry I realized my question was not very clear :( I have changed it. Opinions welcome and preferably an answer by the site admin. :)

(Note that the same principle is followed by answers. The accepted answer may have zero votes, or fewer votes than other answers.)

I think the idea is that the community over time can up-vote useful questions and answers, independent of the intent of the original question and the accepted answer.

All questions are presumably useful to at least one person. Upvoted questions form a dynamic FAQ. But over time, some questions may become less useful, or irrelevant, as Unity and tools that serve it evolve. The voting maintains the FAQ.

Or maybe the answer is simply: since most questions get answered, giving them all one vote for getting answered serves no purpose.

This is the way I would think about it - questions with 0 votes or multiple answers with no acceptance means it is still incomplete (WIP). Giving one vote if it has an accepted answer (assu$$anonymous$$g it wasn't up-voted by someone already) does serve a purpose, it most likely shows it's a complete unit and possible FAQ material. Once a question gets over two votes then it's more likely of general interest and defiantly heading toward FAQ material.

I notice that you ask that the question - not the answer - gets at least one vote if there's an accepted answer.

I don't think that follows, because even though the question got answered, it could still be an uninteresting question. For example, it could be rather off-topic, or it could be so specific to a specific project that it isn't likely to be of help to anyone else.

$$anonymous$$y thought on that was if someone took the time to answer a question it must have had some value? Also the original poster took the time to mark it an acceptable answer. Better to leave it unanswered if it's uninteresting or off-topic

I disagree. For example, someone could cram five unrelated questions into one question, and somebody else could answer all of them. The answer could then be marked as accepted, but the question should definitely not be up-voted. I don't think that leaving the question unanswered is a good solution. In the end, helping each other is the goal, and we should not let guidelines or posting etiquette become so important that it stops us from helping out.

No this shouldn't happen, Someone could spam reputation by answering and accepting their own questions.

Although I generally upvote any answer I accept, it seems possible that an answer could be the one that resolves your question, even though it's not a particularly good answer.

I am aware this may be a good example =P
