Question by James Davies · Mar 31, 2011 at 11:28 PM · terrainobjectgraphicslightmapmodelling

Which program would you say is the best for modelling ?

Hey guys, just to say im new here and this has been bugging me for a while, I decided to get unity as I saw it was highly rated and was able to work with Java coding, however after joining unity3d ive randomly decided to learn Csharp instead as I thought it would be a nice change from my basic java knowledge.

however more to the point I just wanted to ask, what are the best programmes/software for modelling with compatibility with unity? so far I already have Cinema 4d and 3ds max from old projects with old I.T work. I just wanted to see someones view on the matter? could someone tell me which program they think would be best for modelling for unity/boning/animating? it would be a great help! :)

P.S ( it doesnt matter how expensive the software is, i would just like to have a look into them )

Thanks, James.

3DS Max is, in my opinion, flawless (Just remember to export it as a MESH and not a POLY... Like, on the side with convert to in the modifier menu)....

Minus that, yeah...

I know that Cinema is pretty well, but I never used it...

I think that Maya sucks, but that's just personal opinion... Never tried to import anything from it...

Blender is free and works pretty well as well...

It really is more of a personal opinion on how you like to model...

Bottom left for a list of what you can use....

Hope this helps... But yeah, 3DS is my baby.

I know you will get nicked for posting this here, a mainly programming Q/A forum, rather than a general forum where this type of thing is discussed continually, but I've worked with Max and Blender. I'm now fully on Blender. The price is right and it works on all my machines (Win/Mac).

It depends on what you want to acomplish with the software, i'd say the most powerful one is 3dsMax, but if you dont need any fancy modeling capabilities you can go for Blender (free, just a download away) or SketchUp(very easy and intuitive to use), in both softwares you just hit save, drag and drop the file to your assets folder an there it is, no need to export/import(unity has built in support for their formats). Once in the assets folder, your can open it, modify and save, it gets automatically updated in your scene. Just remember that in sketchup you currently need to save as .skp 2015 or below because unity cant recognize 2016 and 2017 sketchup files at the present moment.
