2.5D ai to follow player via waypoints?

Hello,

I've been struggling for a few weeks now, searching, mixing and trying various solutions only to not have the specific result I was looking for. I'm an animator so programming and scripting is not my forte, though I'm starting to understand some basics.

The gameplay would be on the similar lines of Abe's Oddysee and Another World, a cinematic puzzle platformer. I've got a character controller set up and working for the player, but I'm having problems to get an AI for the 2nd character to follow behind on it's own x axis, as to not get in the way of the player. The 2nd character should also stop following the player after is gone out of sight or is further away.

I've got a basic detect and follow ai setup in Rain 2.0, and while it does work the 2nd character won't stay fixed on it's x axis and blocks the player path. I'm now looking into using WaypointMaster and seeing if there's any way to alter that for what I want.

Anyhelp would be very much appreciated!
