Working with UI Text in 4.6
I have been doing the tutorial on the Space Shooter. I am not positive, but I believe step #15 needs to be updated for Unity 4.6:
https://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/projects/space-shooter/counting-points
I found a tutorial on UI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOX6itCuKOc), and am able to see a Text control in my scene. What I have not found is how to create a instance or reference to a UI Text from a script in order to update it. Can someone share an example or point me to a tutorial or example on how to do this?
Thanks
create a game object add a Text
component.
make sure that you include using UnityEngine.UI;
near the top of the file...
to find one - find the game object then do a GetComponent()
to get the reference to it...
go through all of the unity ui tutorials too and look at the scripting documentation - it's not as incomplete as you might think.
What's incomplete is the project tutorials don't match Unity 4.6. If I had a dime for every "where do I find the GUIText component" question over the past month. I could probably buy a candy bar or something.
go with the something! ;)
agreed - it is frustrating that so many of these questions could be answered if the docs matched the tutorials but keeping everything in sync is probably not a priority with 5.x being close(ish) to release...
[rant] at the least the op clearly made an effort - seems that some just use this as their google...

Add using UnityEngine.UI at the top of you script. The declare a variable of the Text type. Then drag in your text component on the inspector.
Yup, that's it. Thank you. Sorry for the newb question. I just started with Unity last week. Also, for anyone else, found this nice video tutorial:

Great explanation of canvas, and he talks about the actual scripting at the end of the vid.
