Dynamic, warped text

Hey guys. I've got a bit of a whacky idea but no real place to start in implementing it. I'm pretty sure a sahder is the right way to go? Or perhaps projectors? But I could use some direction.

Basically, I want to map a dynamic word onto the visible portion of a mesh, that updates when the user changes their perspective. The effect is probably easier to show in pictures:

frame 1 frame 2 frame 3

Any ideas on how to achieve this affect? I figure I need some way to generate the text, lay it over the mesh, and then warp it to fit into the mesh.

um .. basically would you be making the text image ("the PNG") in real time and then using that as the texture?

alternately, check out FlyingText3D which may or may not be relevant

Yeah, something like that. FlyingText3D doesn't sounds right, but hmmm. Does anyone have any resources on just doing a frontal texture?
