Why does UI canvas display with corner at center of screen for first scene?
The canvas for the first scene is displaying its bottom left corner in the center of the screen when it is built for web. It is then positioned correctly in other scenes ( it is a "DontDestroyOnLoad" object ).
It is a root object i.e. not nested. It doesn't happen in the editor preview.
Unity 4.6.2f1. Didn't see anything in the later updates mentioning this as a fix. FireFox 35.0.1 if that makes a difference.

Didn't have a camera in the first scene!
I have a main camera. I have even tried creating the canvas as a child of it. Still the game view sets at the bottom left corner
Got it had to add the camera to the canvas as render camera. Sorry for my ignorance.
