cloth simulations for characters, best approach?

I've found a few packs that have offer some solutions. I was just hoping someone with some experience making things for characters like capes, loin cloths, trench coats could offer some advice. I'm approaching this project from no cloth sim experience, but plenty of character modelling. Anything is appreciated! Thanks again.
