Question by AlucardJay · Mar 13, 2013 at 07:50 AM · charactercontrollercharactermotor

what are realistic values for the character controller

I have searched, the search string was the title of my question. I have also searched human movement speed. The only decent answer, and still nothing that gives real-world values is an equation called Fitts's law.

So to make a non-unity question a Unity-specific question : what are some decent real world values that can be used for the Character Motor script with the FPC from Unity?

Personally as soon as I bring the FPC to a scene I assign the movement speed to 8. The default is 6. Looking at Aldos Crouch and Run script, walkSpeed = 7; crouchSpeed = 3; runSpeed = 20;

I like the run speed, so that is my second standard. So have at it, what does anyone/everyone think? While you're here, how about suggesting a suitable jump height, and some proven working values for sliding and slope gradients?

Consider the scale of the world to be 1 unit = 1 meter, and not some Borderlands or other world settings, just here on Earth would be really helpful.

dude I dunno if it helps but I jog at right on 2.7 m/s (that's a slow "LISS" jog) (example, 20km jog in over two hrs)

since i am a video game engineer, I try to train myself to think in m/s about everyday things.

I was pleased to read on the internet somewhere ... "$$anonymous$$iyamoto has stated that he has a hobby of guessing the measurements of objects, then checking to see if he was correct, and apparently carries a tape measure with him everywhere." I'm not that dedicated, but same idea.

I realise you are probably talking about some infuriating abstract scale used by Unity in the CC right?

Have you considered build a 100 meter "track" and see how fast a character walks on it ??

Thankyou for your response! And awesome work on the self-dicipline with the jogging. I shall not judge you harshly for not carrying a tape measure =]

In my head I can see a chart like this (totally random values used here!) :

 speed (m/s) | 1 5 10 15 20

 $$anonymous$$ouse ---------
 Human -------------
 Horse ---------------------
 Cheetah ---------------------------

I thought it would be easy to find this online, well I failed so had to throw this simple question out here.

As you suggested, I can work backwards and check what my movement speed is as a value in the char ctrlr compared to a real-life value. Then check against textures or objects to get a sense of the feel of the characters 'velocity'.

Someone must have a reference link like this, displaying various creatures and their average movement speeds for walking and running. But for all my efforts, it is eluding me ....

I guess this one won't get any answers apart from your approximations which I sincerely thank you for. This is the type of question that falls into the category of : what numbers do I put into my particle effect to make a thruster? These questions just don't get answers. That and this question barely has a tangible link to being Unity-Specific. Still, I hoped to provoke a little feedback. Thankyou very much for yours (and for supporting me and my answers). I'm disabled so jogging, rollerblading and kossak dancing have been off the agenda for a long while now =] This is for personal use, also research for my noob tutorial videos : http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/173876-Program$$anonymous$$g-and-$$anonymous$$aking-Games-with-Unity-3D

shit - the top speed of horses is 16 m/s !!!

http://jeb.biologists.org/content/211/24/3836/F3.expansion.html

A very worthwhile fact to remember: the speed of both greyhounds and horses is in fact .. about the same. That's extremely useful to know.

"Dogs and horses run at about the same speed."

I really did not know that until looking in to it.

Regarding humans it's easy to remember that the absolute top-end speed is about 10 m/s ... because 100 meter races come in at about 10 seconds. Very few humans can run faster than 5 m/s. Long-distance races are about 5 m/s. Also worth remembering.

Dunno if this helps ...

http://jeb.biologists.org/content/211/24/3836.full

Re cheetahs. I believe cheetahs are incredibly fast over VERY SHORT distances,

http://www.livescience.com/22080-cheetah-breaks-speed-record.html

but in fact cheetahs only run, in general terms, at about the same speed as a horse or not as fast as a horse, and certainly couldn't sustain it for a mile like a horse can.

after all a horse is a huge animal, and all muscle. you'd expect a big ferrari to be even faster than a racing motorbike, i guess.

Thank you very much for your response. Apart from always enjoying your input here at Unity Answers; I feel you did try to help and gave me excellent resources to continue my research from. So this is (in my opinion) a great answer, worthy of credit. All the Best.

It's nothing. I wish I could be more specific. And I wish I could estimate the sizes of everyday objects, with as much dedication as $$anonymous$$iyamoto !!
