For a whole project like unity island, cut and paste the entire folder (That's the project folder) into My Documents / Unity Projects /, or anywhere else you want, then in unity - go to file->open project-> Select the project folder that you just downloaded. After that, file->open scene-> Select the appropriate scene.
For individual objects or textures, cut and paste them into your PROJECT assets folder, then in unity under the 'project' tab, you should see the object there in a folder or just a file. Drag and drop into your scene / hierarchy to import it into the scene.
It's actually preferable to not mess with the content of your assets folder. Just open unity and drag and drop them in your project window.
I thought whatever assets that are wanted in the scene has to be in the assets folder?
