Question by apiad · Dec 15, 2016 at 04:43 PM · asset storelicense

Can I publish assets with dual license (commercial / non-commercial)?

I have several scripting assets that I would love to share. Since I've put some effort into them, I would like to get some profit. However, I would also love to give something back to the community, since I've learned so much from the many great free resources out there. So, here is the solution I've come up with: I will publish the assets with a price on Unity Asset Store, and also publish them in GitHub with a CC non-commercial license. This way people can use them for learning for free, but will have to pay for using them commercially. My questions are:

  • Is this legal and compatible with Unity's Asset Store license?

  • Is there a way (besides ethics and moral) to enforce or at least try to avoid people downloading the free version and using it commercially?

  • Is this at least legally binding.

  • Is there any other way to achieve this?

Well I will recommend you instead of uploading to github the full source code, just upload the core (most 2-3 useful functions) then for full version refer to the UAS.

This way if they manage to use it commercially it won't hurt you too much. You can allow this as long as they give the credit that way both you and the downloader benefits from it.

  1. IMO, Asset Store doesn't restrict you to redistribute your assets on other channels.

  2. You may place your own license agreement that restricts commercial usage for the assets distributed on other channels. This could be a legal issue rather than a moral one.
