Unity Editor crashes OSX
THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!!! If you own a mac, you might have already seen this message before. This happens when a so called "kernel panic" occurs and means that an error occurred in the core of the operating system.
The Apple support site says that this "kernel panic can be caused by damaged or incompatible software or, in rare cases, by damaged or incompatible hardware."
I have not messed with my hardware since I got my computer, and I've not messed up with my system either. Why should I?
So the only thing left is that this "kernel panic" is "caused by damaged or incompatible software".
Allow me to explicate; Unity is a "damaged or [an] incompatible software".
I tried to reinstall Unity and guess what... I still got the usual $$anonymous$$ernel Panic
CAN SO$$anonymous$$EONE PLEASE TELL $$anonymous$$E WHAT I SHOULD DO... I $$anonymous$$UST CONTINUE $$anonymous$$A$$anonymous$$ING $$anonymous$$Y GA$$anonymous$$E BUT I CAN'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'$$anonymous$$ ALL OUT OF IDEAS!!!!!!!
I tried recreating the kernel panic using another project... same thing. It's not my project that's causing this.
I tried again with nothing plugged in except my keyboard, mouse and my two displays... I even disconnected my wireless connection to the internet. I still got a $$anonymous$$P

I use unity on a fairly sizeable number of macs, and i've never seen the problem.
My best guess would be an issue with the graphics card overheating from the looks of the the screen.
Alternatively, if you own the same macbook pro I use (~2-3 years old one), they had a pretty huge batch of laptops sent out with a faulty logic board, which have that exact problem after a fairly large time (And if it is that exact problem, they'll replace it for free).
On the other hand, if you haven't tried reinstalling unity yet, do that first, it's a heck of a lot simpler
"from the looks of the the screen." I took that photo with my phone... because obviously I couldn't do a screen grab ;)
I think I've tried almost everything I can without the need to spend money, and reinstalling unity.
http://forum.unity3d.com/viewtopic.php?p=40941&sid=5ad30479c664364ebbfe157578ec5193 I've done what this thread recommends, it didn't work.
I've tried checking on new drivers, no mac drivers exist for my ATI Radeon HD 2600 PCI card
I've tried installing all the newest updates from apple using software update. Still doesn't work, I still get my faithful kernel panics
By the way, I have $$anonymous$$ac OS X 10.5.8 on an 8 core mac pro and 2Gb of RA$$anonymous$$. But I doubt that lack of RA$$anonymous$$ is the problem since the pie graph in my menu bar that shows RA$$anonymous$$ usage, shows that just 1/4th of my RA$$anonymous$$ is occupied.

I FIXED IT!!!!! It was either my graphics card or my RAM, either way, my whole computer was very dusty inside. I took out the graphics card and my RAM and give it a good dusting. I made sure that the fan on my graphics card wasn't stuck by dusting it too and I gave it a lil spin.
I guess Unity is just very demanding on the graphics card, and that's why this happened with Unity but nothing else.
But Thanks a lot for your help and support guys. I take back what I said about Unity.
I had dibs on graphics card overheating! ;) Glad it's fixed though :)
yeah, but u assumed it by the picture that was taken... but anyways... u were still right... I think...

Well considering that Unity has (as of June 8, 2010) 170,000+ developers with a sizable percentage of which are on Macs, saying
Unity is a "damaged or [an] incompatible software".
is not a fair assumption at all. I have been using Unity on both platforms for over a year and a half and have never encountered such an error or equivalent on either.
My suggestion is perhaps reinstall the software or maybe run a repair. There could also be some other system errors in the background that are causing this.
Cheers.

I said that because usually I have never gotten any help from any one or any forum with any problem I've ever had on my mac. I've always been forced to fix things myself because everyone ignores my "oh please help me". I was just trying to grab attention and, well, I was also a bit furious since I've had.. hmmmm about 10-20 kernel panics while playing my game in the Unity Editor, it's making me pull my hair off my head.
btw... there is nothing else running in the background that could be the cause of this... UNITY IS the SOURCE of this, because if the source would be the graphics card or the driver I could not be able to see any 3D or something like that... when I use UNITY THIS HAPPENS... Either unity IS the problem, or it's triggering it. my fairly good brain is good enough to figure that out.
I'm not doubting that something that Unity is doing is triggering this with your configuration. Just saying that it's your configuration and not the software.
this ONLY happens with unity and nothing else.... saying that it's something else that's triggering it is not logical.
I haven't done anything to my computer and it works under all other circumstances. But when I hit play in the Unity Editor, and play for about a $$anonymous$$ute, I get a kernel panic.
Again, I am not at all doubting Unity is triggering your issue. I am just stating that if 170k other users are using it, it is not JUST the software because then it would be a much more commonly noted issue. Isn't that logical? It is something to do with your particular system AND Unity that is causing the error. Does it happen when you run any Unity game or just your game, in the editor?

Do you have any information that supports that Unity is the problem? I am on a mac have never received a "need to restart your mac" crash dialog related to Unity. The few times I have receive them they were probably more hardware related than software related. If you look at the Activity Monitor application in you Utilities folder you can see all the processes that could be potentially causing your issue.
Another thing you can do is go to Utilities>Console>Log Database Queries>All Messages which should give you more detail on the log messages leading up to your crash which will probably narrow the issue down to what is actually causing your crash.
done this, done that, nothing! there are no messages concerning this. Want me to double check? I'll do that, but it's probably just a waste of time.
but I was like WHAAAT when you said "Activity monitor"... that doesn't make any logs... that just shows what's happening at the moment... right?
Dude, the most recent messages in the Utilities>Console>Log Database Queries>All $$anonymous$$essages... are from $$anonymous$$ay 2009. Trust me on that, I'm not lying. The only message from the Console that could possibly be of ANY use is the last system message before the $$anonymous$$ernel Panic... here it is: Jul 26 21:08:54 daniels-mac-pro Unity[1801]: NSDocumentController Info.plist warning: The values of CFBundleTypeRole entries must be 'Editor', 'Viewer', 'None', or 'Shell'.
that was... by the way, with Unity reinstalled... there is NOTHING else I can do that I can think of that could possibly fix this problem. Just the more radical ways of fixing this... e.g. buying another 3300$ mac pro or reinstalling $$anonymous$$ac OS X, or maybe buying a new graphics card. idk... is there anything I could do that doesn't mean I have to spend weeks or hundreds of bucks?
I'd suggest posting to the Unity Support forum and provide as much technical detail as possible, OS, memory, cpu, etc. and include several $$anonymous$$utes of log proceeding the time of your crash. From that, a $$anonymous$$ac or Unity engineer should be able to tell you more about your crash or at least what other logs they might need to see.
