Question by r005t · May 27, 2014 at 04:02 PM · guiscreenunity 4textfieldlabel

Why do a GUI.label and GUI.textfield not align vertically?

I have laying out a GUI and I am unable to determine why a GUI.label and GUI.textfield are not aligning vertically.

I set the relevant parameters for sizing like this:

     public float farLeftHorizAlign = .875f;
     public float leftMiddleHorizAlign = .75f;
     public float leftHorizAlign = .625f;

     public float rightHorizAlign = .5f;
     public float rightMiddleHorizAlign = .375f;
     public float farRightHorizAlign =  .125f;

     public float topVertAlign = .125f;
     public float topHighMiddleVertAlign = .25f;
     public float middleTopVertAlign = .375f;
     public float lowTopVertAlign = .5f;
     public float lowMiddleVertAlign = .625f;
     public float bottomVertAlign = .75f;
     public float lowBottomVertAlign = .875f;

 void Start()
 {
     //set positions
     nfLeft = Screen.width * rightHorizAlign;
     nfTop = Screen.height * topVertAlign;

     nlLeft = Screen.width * farRightHorizAlign;
     nlTop  = Screen.height * topVertAlign;
 }

Then, create the fields in OnGUI like this:

 void OnGUI()
 {
     //reskin the GUI
     GUI.skin = customSkin;

     //create name label
     GUI.Label(new Rect(nlLeft, nlTop, nlHeight, nlWidth),"Your name:");
     //create name field
     nameString = GUI.TextField (new Rect (nfLeft, nfTop, nfWidth, nfHeight), nameString,nameLength);
 }

To me, it seems like they should align vertically (should be beside each other). However, the end result looks like this:

alt text

Is there something different in the way that different GUI elements handle cooridinates? It seems to me they should line up as the values for the top of each rectange is the same.

Thanks for the help, sorry, I am new to Unity gui.

I must sheepishly admit that I was applying a GUISkin somewhere else in the code and there was an offset there which was causing the displacement. Something to be aware of I suppose.
