Should I implement a resolution setting?
Hi,
I'm developping a 3d game that is not really cheap in term of performance. I have many options to decrease quality and I was thinking about the possibility to have also the resolution setting. Of course it's not as easy as it have to catch all the possible devices/resolutions, android beeing the hardest to configure.
Today I said myself than maybe I should give up on that idea and rely on the fact that a device should handle well its max resolution. On my galaxy s5 the game runs smoothly with no problem but I can't test on all the devices if they work fine as well.
So here are the questions. How do you guys handle with that? And more importantly, do you believe I should make this option?
Initially focus on getting your project complete. If this idea is causing you a headache and preventing you getting on then put it to one side and come back to it as the project matures, the answer may be more obvious then. Besides only you can really answer the question "Should I implement a resolution setting?". But don't let it stop you getting on!
Right now I have almost finished all the components of the game. I'm working on it since 9 months so I won't give up :p. I have a level editor, all the prefabs ready, the menu and stuff and lots of optimization. Apart from some $$anonymous$$or stuff, all I need to do are the levels and the music and I didn't answered those questions yet.
Thanks for the input anyway!
$$anonymous$$aybe I should ask this way then...
Are they lots of game that include this option?
If they have it, are they really perfomance expansive so they need it?
Do you have it in your games? If so is this really important to have it?
This question is far to generic to answer meaningfully. Let me invert the question so that you may find your answer... Do you think that you require targeted performance optimisations for less powerful devices and does the market you are ai$$anonymous$$g for have a large number of devices that will benefit from such optimisations?
You will figure out the $$anonymous$$imum requirements once you finish the game and do some testing ;) The $$anonymous$$imum requirements will become lower as you add more optimisations, also you will be able to profile your game's performance to deter$$anonymous$$e where the most beneficial optimisations are likely to be had (you may even be at this stage now). It sounds like you had already made your $$anonymous$$d up before asking the question, but again let me state... it's much better to get something working for someone than to get nothing working for everyone! Good luck :)
