Unity Student Pro - Releasing game for free
Hi,
For school I'm working on a project for 'My Machine'. It's an organization which goes to schools and asks the kids there what their dream-machine is, and then they build it. Since last year they also make games in which the dream-machines are used.
I'm one of the students who's working on the project, the school we went to were kids of 11-12 years old. Now it would be a really big help if we could use SVN to properly work together.
For this we're thinking of buying a student license of Unity Pro. Though my question is now if we do this, are we allowed to 'release' this game to those kids, and put it on the MyMachine website for other kids to download for free?
To clarify: we are not planning to let those kids work with Unity Pro, we are planning on releasing a build of our game to them. We can't afford an actual Unity Pro license, but we could maybe use a Unity Pro Student version.
Thanks ! -The Oddler
remember: it's nothing commercial, everything is done to learn and is given away for free. The organization '$$anonymous$$y $$anonymous$$achine' is also just trying to give the kids a good time, not trying to make money.

Hi there. I work for Unity, so you can use this answer as Unity's official position. The Student version of Unity can be used by any registered student whilst they are learning Unity. You can build applications and give those applications away provided you make no commercial benefit from doing so. These applications will have a watermark on them saying that they were created using a student version. If this restriction is not to your liking, then please consider using our Free version which can be used by anyone for any purpose, including commercial use. (We actually want you to make money using Unity Free.)
Ooh, someone whom actually works for Unity :o
Thanks for the answer, I don't think we $$anonymous$$d the overlay (at least I won't). We are currently using the free version, but the lack of svn support is very annoying.
Thanks ! This is the exact answer I was hoping for :D

Sure. :) You can do what you want with things you develop in Unity. The only restriction I'm aware of is if you have a company, and you're making more than $100.000/year, I believe, then you can't use the indie version. (I think).
But giving your own game away for free to kids? I don't think the folks at Unity are going to mind that. This isn't Apple, they won't sue you. :-D
That is, you can use the build of your game in whatever way you like. You can't use a licensed copy of the Unity Editor for more than 1 person with 1 desktop + 1 laptop. When you said "for other kids to download for free" you meant a build of your game, right?
I of course mean a build of the game, not Unity Pro itself. The thing is though, you can release it when you buy Unity Pro (1500$), though we were thinking of buying the Unity STUDENT Pro (90$). Though the user agreement says that you can use it for educational purposes, not commercial. It's not commercial, and it's for educational purposes, but not sure if we can give it away.
