Question by theorbitgames · Jul 22, 2014 at 08:49 AM · animationerrorlegacy

Animation help??!

I spent an hour working on an idle animation for my character, he moves up and down as he breathes, and when I try to test the game, my character won't move, but the animation plays.

And whenever I make an animation clip, a message appears on the console tab saying "This animation must be marked as Legacy", but I don't know what to do about that. Lastly, I watched a Unity tutorial on animation and the guy said there's a button in the corner that makes the animation loop, play once etc. but it's not there, the only thing that's there is Dope Sheet and Curves.

This is actually a big problem, if I can't get this fixed, I'll have to cancel this game! (So to the moderator reading this, PLEASE approve this question.)

Click on the asset (fbx?) in the project. In the inspector, click on the Rig tab, and change the type from the default Generic to Legacy.

Thanks, but what about my character not moving?

We need more information. How are you moving the character? Was he moving before? $$anonymous$$aybe post some code?

When I don't have any animation components added to the character, he moves. I have a character controller and the character scripts from the Standard Assets.

Also, I can't find a "Rig tab", I'm still learning how to use Unity.

If you can't animate a character from the manual you probably should cancel the game. Just saying.

I actually have nothing useful to contribute.

There is a fair amount to learn about creating and controlling a character using scripts, sample assets and controllers, besides just the animation and setting up humanoid characters. You should endeavour to use Mecanim rather than Legacy animation if you are working with Characters

http://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/MecanimAnimationSystem.html

In any case you may find that a tutorial that runs you through the whole process of setting up a character as a player may help. This makes use of the awesome 'sample assets' to help you see how it's done by example:

http://blogs.unity3d.com/2014/04/14/turn-your-character-into-a-player/ http://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/modules/beginner/animation

Good luck and have fun!

OllyNicholson is correct @theorbitgames. You should look at a tutorial for the $$anonymous$$ecanim system. I have a strong feeling you will get on better with it than Legacy, which in my opinion, can be a bit of a scripting knightmare.

It sounds to me like you need to look at Animation Layers. From this you will learn how to give animations priority through weighting of layers.

$$anonymous$$ecanim provides a very straight forward way to $$anonymous$$ix animations via the Body$$anonymous$$ask system. Using this you can run an idle animation with the upper body while walking with the lower body, if you choose.

This is possible in Legacy too, but $$anonymous$$ecanim takes out the arduous scripting.

Check out the AngryBots tutorial for a good example of Legacy animation scripting.

However for $$anonymous$$ecanim, I do Not recommend the 'Locomotion' tutorial. I found it long winded and overcomplicated, never see$$anonymous$$g to get to the point. It seemed to make the whole notion of $$anonymous$$ecanim seem bloated and difficult. This is very much not the case.
