Efficiently adding sounds to animation

Hi, I will ask questions first, maybe the answers are simple and it is not necessary to read all my "story" :) but if you need more details, whole "story" is below questions.

  1. Is there any way to show animation time in float (like in code) and not in frames?

  2. How to make animation (imported from Maya) "non-read-only" so I can add events to it?

OK, here comes more information about my problem. I don't know how efficiently add sounds to animations. For example, I have FBX exported from Maya with model, rig and all animations, including walk animation. I want to add sound of footstep in every frame in which foot of character is touching the ground.

I can do this in code using animation.time but it is not accurate - because in Animation window animation time is shown in frames and in code the animation.time is a float number. This lack of unification is giving me serious problems. The best option would be using only key numbers or float numbers (in animation window and code). Is there any way to do it? (queastion 1)

There is another option. Events. I understand that I can put events into animation and event will play sound in specified frame. But I can't do this in my animation, because it is Read-Only (imported from Maya). So this is why I am asking question 2.

Or maybe there is another, better option to add sounds to animation and synchronize all these assets?
