Help with movement animation script

I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find something that works. This is what I have:

Rig model

3 animations: Idle (default) Running, and jumping.

They are set up in an animator controller as follows:

Parameters; Float-Running 1.0 Bool- Jumping

Transitions; Idle -> Running (Transitions if running exceeds .1) Running -> Idle (Transitions if running is less than .1) Running -> Jumping (Transitions if Jumping is true) Jumping -> Running (Transitions if Jumping is false) Idle -> Jumping (Transitions if Jumping is true) Jumping -> (Transitions if Jumping is false)

My issue is writing a script that will trigger all of these animations and I cannot find any one that works properly. I also don't know exactly how to set up the character. Should I be using the First Person Controller asset? Is there a way to set it up without it? Any help would really be greatly appreciated. As of now, the only thing I have going on is the character on terrain with the animations linked to him.
