Can I easily move between free and pro IDEs?
I have access to the pro version of Unity at my institution, but only the free version at home. I aim to work on my game at both locations, and keep in synch via version control.
Assuming I employ some pro features (I don't know which yet), will I be able to easily switch between free and pro development environments? In the best case, I imagine pro features gracefully disabling themselves when I'm using the free IDE, and becoming available again when I'm on the pro IDE. In the worst case, I would lose the pro features every time and have to redo / re-configure / re-enable them. Which scenario can I anticipate, or is it feature-specific?

Check that it isn't against the terms of the EULA to build a project that uses Pro and Free versions at the same time for your situation as that is in violation of the EULA for "Legal Entities".
Features gracefully disable, though code which relies on them may throw errors.
@whydoidoit are you saying that my specific scenario as described already violates the EULA? :( can you direct me to that section of the EULA so I can assess? fwiw this is a never-to-be-released student project for assessment (in the very hypothetical scenario that I did release it, I would presumably remove the pro features and build it with the free version)
(2) Restrictions
(a) Unity Free Restrictions. If you are a Legal Entity, you acknowledge and agree that as an express condition to the license rights granted under Section 1(a), you are not permitted to combine or integrate in any manner any Licensee Content developed with Unity Free with any Licensee Content developed simultaneously with Unity Pro. For the avoidance of doubt, (i) if you are a permitted user of Unity Free, you may commence a project using only Unity Free and subsequently upgrade all (but not less than all) of your licenses to Unity Pro, and (ii) any user of the Software may use content licensed from third parties regardless of the version of the Software that was used to develop such third party content.
The avoidance of doubt section implies that this does not only apply to Legal Entities which are defined as follows:
“Legal Entity” means any company, corporation, limited liability company, general partnership, limited partnership, limited liability partnership, proprietorship, joint venture or other form of business organization. Legal Entity includes, without limitation, any government, non-profit, educational or academic institution, including but not limited to any primary or secondary school, vocational school, college or university.
Perhaps if this isn't clear enough - you could contact sales. It might not apply to individuals in your situation. I'm not sure.
If I were you I would proceed with Free as your core development environment. This won't work if you need advanced image techniques that require access to renders (like building a depth of field effect) or using any of the image effects that come with Pro.
