how to make my game darker?

I have tried turing the ambiant lighting down in the render settings but it has made no difference

What shaders are you using? Are you using shaders that take lighting into account?

I am using transparent/ vertex coloured what is the best shader to use for spritemanager2 and get a dark game.

I have no experience using spritemanager but if you're game is done using sprites then lighting should have no effect on them at all, you just need to modify your spritesheets to make them darker.
