OnlineNoob - Connecting via Unity

Ok, So I'm used to making single player games in Unity and all that business but I want to now explore the depths of the online gaming genre. There are millions of questions I could ask now but I'll save them for later. As for now, here's my first question into the multi-player world.

If multiple people play the Unity game together, does the Unity game have to be compiled for all of them or say, the developer runs the game from his/her Unity project file, and the other players run it from the compiled file, will they connect together. If that's so, the developer could move an object or edit the level (I know changes won't be saved whilst playing) whilst his/her other friends give him help and tips on the game and what to change.

You could, but you would need some code to send/tell that an object has has moved to all the clients. This is called basically state synchronization.
