Physics/cpu performance on iPod Touch 4th Gen Abnormally slow?

I'm building a game for both iOS and android, I'm testing it on the iPod Touch 4th Gen and a Sony Erricson xperia play.

Both have 1ghz processors (granted, from different companies) but should run at roughly the same performance given the same tasks.

What I'm finding is while the xperia can handle some basic 3D rigidbody physics without a hitch the iPod hates it and routinely goes under 6fps (while the sony erricson seldom goes below 25fps).

I'm not sure why the performance is so poor on the iPod but I don't think it's normal so I was hoping someone here could help me out..
