Sword-based-fighting

Im implementing a sword based fighting system for my game and now i want to ask if you got an idea how to set this up in a nice way. Just give me some examples how you would build such a system, no code needed. As reference: The sword fighting classes in Neverwinter.

Your question is far too vague and too large in scope. Implement a sword based fighting system? That might take an experienced programmer days, weeks, or months depending on how intensive they wanted to get.

Your question is tantamount to asking someone to write your code for you. Try working with collisions, making objects receive "damage" or affect scripts attached in some way on collision. Start there and then start posting code, and work from there.

What you're asking is not a simple question with a simple answer.

In your reference example, you only say "classes"; are you also doing a 3rd person follow-camera RPG like NN? Because there are indeed so many ways to do it that some guidance to genre and view camera would help narrow it down. After all, it could be anything from 1st person sword physics to pre-rendered sprites with swords.

I love the way people answer questions on here.

Half the problem with this community is SOME PEOPLE seem to expect novices to know everything and give stupid answers. He said NO CODE REQUIRED and gave an example of what he's looking for, so with that in mind here's my take on it.

I'm actually developing something similar so as an idea(I havent fully fleshed this out):

Essentially you need colliders on the defender so that he can receive hits, if you just want one you can, or maybe add a few for different body parts.

You'd then have your attacker swing his weapon, range and no blocking permitting then you'd have a hit if the weapon enters the collider, you can then do damage accordingly.

Zombience was right about one thing, its a fairly broad subject so initially i'd have a sit down and spec out exactly what you're trying to achieve, if you need any more help let me know

Thanks

Marc

I don't expect novices to know everything, nor am I trying to give stupid answers. Unity Answers is a place for fairly specific questions within limited scope. Discussions are for the forums.

You answered the question more specifically with colliders, I gave a more general answer suggesting working with colliders. If he needs to know about colliders, how they work, and when to use them, that's a much more concrete question that will yield a lot more useful answers.

What I'm ai$$anonymous$$g for, and perhaps didn't express clearly, is guiding users to ask better questions so we can help them in a more focused way. If their questions are too broad, then it should be a discussion for the forum, which I failed to mention.

I apologise if I came across terse but I have just spent three months learning unity to a point where I'm starting to make headway, when your new even the very simplest of tasks can take days and with nobody wanting to give pointers here it can be soul destroying.

I completely understand. I'm an entirely self taught programmer and Unity3D user, and it's a rough road. Thanks for the feedback on giving good answers. I'll try to be more clear and helpful.

Best of luck on the road to developing awesome games!
