Duration app suspension

To surmise, in my game if you suspend the app by hitting the home button on the iPad and return to the game again it brings up an option menu. I've noticed however that eventually the app will be completely terminated, so if you return to the game it's completely restarted. Is there a way to control this, or is this just how iOS works?
