3D Studio Max 9 assets crashing Unity
We're having an issue where certain asset files produced from 3D Max 9 (the version our company has licensed presently) are causing Unity to check out.
The symptom of the error is that Unity begins to parse the asset file and the progress bar hangs. Once this happens the system craters and starts to consume memory dragging quad processor 64 bit XP system with 6gig of Ram to its knees. If left alone will eventually crash the system on an "Out of Virtual Memory" error. We can force quit Unity when it happens, but it takes a while for the system to recover... 5 to 10 minutes on average to "recover" from when one of these events occurs.
The actual error, from what we can determine, is occurring in 3D Max when it is launched by Unity. It looks like there's some kind of endless loop being entered. However, it only happens when being launched by Unity. That is, the model works fine in 3D Max itself, it's only in the process of trying to import it into Unity as an asset that the crash occurs.
Anyone have a clue what the cause of this might be or how to fix it?
Also, some of our models get flagged by Unity as having caused it to crash when this happens. Then we can no longer use that model name as Unity will no longer look at the model even if we replace it. How do we "unflag" a model that has been flagged as damaged?
For the record, it appears this issue is in 3D $$anonymous$$ax, not Unity. We've done some testing and found that the FBX exported in 3D$$anonymous$$ax also chokes when exporting directly inside 3D$$anonymous$$ax without using Unity.
I would be curious if anyone in the community can comment on this issue? I looked for an update to the FBX exported for our version of $$anonymous$$ax (9.0) to no avail. I'm likely going to have to sell the company on upgrading our version of 3D$$anonymous$$ax. Can anyone comment on the stability? I don't want to sell the company on spending the money to upgrade only to have a whole new set of issues or outright failure.
Which FBX plugin are you using? There should be available 2011.3 for 3ds $$anonymous$$ax 9.
