What is the best type of sprites for 2D top-down game
Hello, so I have a 2D top-down survival game (think Don't Starve) in plan and I want to search before starting. I will be using classic 2D sprites for nearly everything definitely, like rocks, trees etc.)
However, I don't know how to do characters' sprites (animals, enemies but also players). I have seen several options and I will say what i think about them, if there are more, please tell me and correct me etc.
So first there when you have 4 directions and the sprites change in between them, think old pixelated Zelda or most rogue-likes. This is definitely not what I want so we move to adding more directions.
This is the first option, have normal 2D sprites and having many of them for many directions. I don't know but it feels to me that this method is just... glitchy(?). What i mean by that that with free, all-direction movement, there will be directions that do not have associated sprites and will feel unnatural as the character moves one direction while facing slightly away.
The next one is having 3D models and just rendering them on 2D plane. Just making one 3D model then changing directions directly in Unity with object.
So, tell me your opinion or ways to do this and please don't just say "do it this way", give me reasons and really explain it to me. Thank you, have a nice day
