2D Character Motion

I'm beginning to create a 2D side scrolling platformer, my character is a 3D model I was just wondering would I be better off using the Unity physics system for character motion, or the Transform.translate, or some combination of the two. The motion I'm going for is a pretty complex set of movements, things like skidding to a stop it the opposite direction is pressed, sliding down slopes, swinging on ropes, and the a few others that see like the physics system is the obvious way to go. However should I use if for the simple left, right, and jump motion? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

It depends on what you want. Do you want your character to have realistic physics or not. If not, then go to the character motion, as that allows you to define your own physics of how your player should act to the environment.

Hmm ok, I'll definitely want realistic physics, I'm looking at the Unity $$anonymous$$ecanim system for animation too and they seem to give you the option for using the physics system, so that seems like my best avenue for now. :) Thanks
