Building game like prison architect. How to manage sprites?

Hi,

I want to make a builder game that is topdown. You could say the building part is similar to prison architect, rimworld etc.

How do you manage it so that when you build a wall and later update that wall when you build the next one next to it? How does this process work? I know you need a sprite spreadsheet or something like that, but how to make it all look seamless and update correctly?

Basically anything tile-based can and should leverage the features of tile based games. There's a few decades worth of reading material about tile-based games just waiting to be found and read. :)

Using proper tile-based design techniques makes finding nearby or adjacent objects lightning fast and cheap: You just check contents of neighboring cells by looking at adjacent array elements...

The final stage of your structure-placement method will exa$$anonymous$$e nearby cells and, in the case of a wall, might replace that wall cell's visual representation with a corner, cross, or T intersection as needed.

There's really a ton of information about this kind of thing floating around; I'd suggest a major research expedition prior to investing a ton of time on your project. Nothing's quite as horrifying as realizing you've spent 50 hours on something that could've taken 5.
