How to make and use a muzzleflash

I am currently working on a project and I want a muzzleflash to appear, so I thought: Hey, how do muzzleflashes work. So could anyone explain it for me?

Muzzle flashes can be either made by 2D images, when it's suitable for the game or by some particle effects.
