Android, Song tries to play then stops when the Screen is off

If the screen turns off while the game music is on, The music goes off but then randomly starts playing for a split second then stops, then starts then stops and waits a few minutes then starts the process again. All while the screen is turned off.

I tried using OnApplicationPause to pause the music, but that doesn't work.

Is there a way to detect if the phone screen is being turned off in side of unity?

I am using Unity 4.3.4f1 the phone is a Kyocera Hydro with Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich)

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated :)
