Setting a render distance for detail meshes

I was wondering if there is a way of setting a render distance for detail meshes (not the terrain detail meshes.) I have 3 layers, low detail, medium detail and high detail which contain different groups of meshes which I am using to detail my scene. It would be really useful to only render the high priority meshes when the camera is within a certain distance to keep things running nice and fast.

Is there a way to do this in Unity without scripting up some kind of advanced camera script?

I think what you're talking about was announced a little while back by Unity... LOD groups
