You should use either whatever you are familiar with or, if you're looking for something free, download and install Blender. 3DSMax, Maya, and Blender are all excellent programs that will produce assets that work in Unity.

I suggest taking a look at Cinema 4d. There are many free software out there which can do a great job at 3d modelling. 3Ds max is free if you apply yourself as a student. When it comes to animation, keyframing is made easy with Cinema 4d. When it comes to Modelling, ZBrush won't work as well (polycount way too high). Use free programs like Blender/ 3ds Max with there brush features. Just a tip, go make something with a low poly count but still looks effective because Unity doesn't go to well (on slow computers) when it comes to handling polygons.
With the Island Demo, you first have to say what errors there are.
