The best way to deal with thousands of textures/pictures offline
I am making an app that allows people to view hundreds of places and see what they're like with pictures. Right now I am stuck on what would be the best way to go offline (required) with such an app without complications and too huge of a download. A few ideas that I've found are:
Using Unity's asset bundles (.unity3d)(Pro), but I don't have pro. I'd imagine that the compression is good, but it looks like I'd need to import all the picture into Unity (causing hours of delays because of the volume of textures). Would be able to be thrown online for an easier download.
Zipping up all the pictures specific to the place (because 1 big zip would kill mobiles). I'd imagine that the compression is ok, but I've seen mixed results with getting unzipping to work. And then I'm not sure how easy it would be from there. Potentially putting all the zips online would be a bit more annoying, but still allow compressed pictures.
Just plain putting all the pictures up on a picture hosting site. No compression, but the easiest to retrieve for download if setup properly. No chance of it being in app already.
Any thoughts/ideas on how to do this the most efficiently?
