How to change terrain with code?,How to edit terrain with code?

I want to have a thing where the user can dig holes in the ground. All I would need is a small function that can dig a hole in the terrain. Thx.,In trying to make something where the user can dig into the ground. I cant find any recourses on how to change terrain with code. All i would need is a simple function that digs into a block of terrain.
