Extended Jump Animation Mecanim

Hi. I'm trying to extend an animation using mecanim, like in the demo video shown in unite 2012 http://video.unity3d.com/video/6942283/unite-12-mecanim-creating around minute 37. They extend a jump animation so that it's looping until the character finds a ledge to hold on to, then the climbing animation continues normally. What I am trying to do is loop a running animation until the characeter is close enough to hit it's target, then continue with the normal attack animation.

I tried using blend trees but for some reason they are not working right. I'm still getting the hang of mecanim, so maybe there are some tricks I don't know.

I'd apretiate any help, or alternatives to solve my problem. Thanks!
