Start up error! WinXP
Hi. I'm on windows xp and just downloaded unity. But when I start it up, There's a pop up saying "master direct3d window failed!" or something like that. Please help!

run dxdiag.exe it should show directdraw acceleration: enabled, direct3d acceleration: enabled (not sure if the last is important here).
If it says acceleration is disabled (not unavailable) look up instructions on turning on hardware acceleration. If that doesn't work, then:
Update direct x to 9.0c, then update your video drivers.
If you have no idea what your video card is, looking under the display adapter in your devices should tell you. If not, I recommend a program called PCWizard to figure out what it is.
If it's still not working, check the hardware acceleration.
If all this doesn't work, chances are your video card doesn't support 3D properly.
I had this problem myself for some reason; my drivers and DX were up to date. But something broke the acceleration, and a driver re-install fixed it.
