Strange crash on package import
Hi all,
I have very strange problem with Unity. When I try import some packages Unity freezes and a bunch of different programs are launched (many instances of each one). For example: audio manager, calculator, accessibility programs, system tools along with some strange invisible processes called Msg and even some processes with unreadable Japanese or Chinese (not sure about that - I can see only some hieroglyphs) titles. As I mentioned above this only happens when I try to import some packages. Can it be Unitypackage contains some virus? Is it possible at all? Thanks in advance.
Almost a year later, but I am experiencing this too, with a legitimate Unity3d and legitimate unitypackages. This annoys the hell out of me. Happens with only some unitypackages though, weird. Have you managed to solve it?
I'm getting this exact same issue. Three years later :)
The package I'm importing is fine (it works great in my copy of Unity 4 Pro, which, yes, is quite legitimate). I've been using it for the last year or so, and it's just a model package, no scripts or anything. However, when trying to import into Unity 5 (not pro), I get the above described symptoms. I have to do a hard reboot to reset my system.
Using Windows 8.1 Pro. It has both Unity 4 (pro) and Unity 5 (non-pro, 64 bit version) installed.
Has anyone else seen this and know of a solution? I've seen it reported a couple of times (e.g. http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/importing-unity-packages-crashes-the-system.288355/ ), but it seems everyone dismisses it as a virus or a problem with the computer (not enough RA$$anonymous$$ or whatnot), rather than giving any actual possible solutions.
So let me debunk that before someone brings it up. It's not a virus, my system is clean. Also, brand new $4,000 computer with a metric crapton of RA$$anonymous$$ and drive space (http://pcpartpicker.com/p/7mf$$anonymous$$RB if you want to see the stats). This is not a system problem, something is up with the importer that is causing this.
I guess it must not happen very often, or it would have been fixed by now. But perhaps someone has run into it and knows of a solution. Unlike the OP, I cannot import my package at all (every time I try to do so, it crashes the OS).

First of all, is your Unity legitimate? If so you may have associated *.unitypackage with another program. If that is not so, your computer has a virus.
