Offloading to GPU
I have been doing some research into voxal methods, and generating terrain on the fly. This lead me to this article. http://wwwcg.in.tum.de/fileadmin/user_upload/Lehrstuehle/Lehrstuhl_XV/Research/Publications/2006/vmv06.pdf
In this article, you can see on the last page the final result of the project. All of these were produced with 70+fps using a pentium 4 and an nvidia geforce7800.
I've tried working with things like this before, but could never achieve this level of detail using the CPU (still maintaining 40+fps on a similar setup).
I know how I would go about programming this to run on the cpu, just as I would any other scripts that I write for Unity. Is there a way to offload these calculations to the GPU through Unity?
Basically what you are doing is creating the terrain through the program, on the fly. Read the article for a more detailed explanation.
Thanks, Matt
