This did not used to be possible, but see the Unity Blacksmith demo and Paint Tool, allowing you to paint onto geometry.

How can I use the terrain editor to place trees and details on my own objects? like a ball or a cube?

And I was wondering if anyone could show me a good tree editor tutorial, specifically I want to make palm trees.
