Attaching Weapon to Animated Character

I know there have been tons of questions similar to this one, but none of them seem to work for me. So, I have this human NPC miner who is just supposed to be in the background of my game mining away at a rock. I made my human, and rigged it with Rigify in blender, animated it, and then I made my pick axe. Then I import them both into Unity. But no matter what I try in Untiy I cannot get the pick to follow her hand in the animation. I have moved the axe into the armature section of the hierarchy. I've tried scripts. But nothing seems to work. Any suggestions? Has anyone else had these troubles? Thank you so much for reading this!
