Question by YellowTube · Oct 09, 2013 at 12:46 AM · crashunity 4.2

Unity 4.2 editor crashes on startup splash screen.

enter code hereHi,

I've been using Unity 4.2 since it came out and all has been fine. This week though I cannot launch Unity and get an immediate crash on start up (right as it shows the Unity splash image). A window appears and says ''Unity Editor has stopped working" - check online for solution / close program.

Below is the error log from that window:

 Problem signature:
   Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

I don't know what to do to fix this and it's very important I find solution asap!!

I've already tried the '-force-d3d11' "fix" and that does nothing for me.

Also, if I install Unity 3.5 it works, so it's something messed up involving 4.2

Any ideas??? :(

Perhaps there is an issue with a project Unity is trying to automatically load. If do not have Unity set up to always open the project wizard you can try the following:

  1. Open Unity by clicking on the icon and hold down the ALT key. This will force the project wizard to open.

  2. Create a new project and continue opening the Unity Editor.

  3. If Unity does not open a new project, I would suggest sending your crash report to Unity for review.

Thanks but the ALT key / pick new project doesn't work because it crashes immediately on splash screen.

Holding ALT I don't see the splash screen.

Did you also try to reinstall Unity 4.2?

Holding ALT doesnt help. It crashes immediately even when holding alt.

Also yes, I've also tried reinstalling Unity 4.2 :(

So I finally got it fixed! Unity tech support had me do the following, which got me back up and running. Hope this helps others who may have the same misfortune as I. Cheers'

TO FIX:

You may need to clear your existing Licensing files. These can cause the Editor to hang upon Reactivation.

Give the steps below a try, and let me know how you get on! The files may be hidden.

1.Uninstall Unity

2.Delete this file (folder):

  • WinXP/Vista: C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/Pace Anti-Piracy/License Files

  • Win7: C:/ProgramData/PACE Anti-Piracy/License Files

  • Mac: HD/Library/Application Support/PACE Anti-Piracy/License Files

and

  • Windows: C:ProgramData/Unity

  • Mac: Library/Application Support/Unity

  1. Restart

  2. Download Unity again from our website, since your original install might be corrupt. http://unity3d.com/unity/download

  3. Reinstall and test

This fixed the issue for me. Was incredibly annoying and almost completely wiped my development laptop to fix it. Would upvote but don't have the privileges yet.

I had a similar thing with the first instal, simply reinstalling/repairing fixed my problem.

I wish that was my case. I've tried re-installing it multiple times. Only 3.5 (and i assume earlier) work when i install now.

and you checked the version? Also when you uninstal make sure you whipe your register data of Unity, you can do this for instance with Ccleaner, if you uninstal trough Ccleaner tools it will auto detect the register and delete it, also you can do an extra register scan to find broken paths or corrupt register and fix them. If that does not work I recommend contacting unity.
