Unity Editor has stopped working
When i run Unity 3D 4.2 it crashes instantly... I don't know what to do.

Here is the solution :
Right Click Shortcut of Unity on Desktop
go to properties.
add this " -force-d3d11 " to the target ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Unity\Editor\Unity.exe" )
It should look something like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Unity\Editor\Unity.exe" -force-d3d11
NOTE -- make sure to include a double space between Unity.exe and -force-d3d11
Otherwise it will say the directory or target does not exist. Cheers.
ALSO NOTE...
in some cases try -force-opengl instead of -force-d3d11
Note however that then you will be stuck using opengl, not 11.
Often the solution to this problem on Windows8 is to restore your system (control panels -> restore) to the previous day ... it can help.
I use windows but -force-opengl works for me....still not sure why this happened and why opgl works ins$$anonymous$$d of d3d11...(unity2017.1.0f3)
In my case Unity used the integrated graphics card by default. Make sure it uses Nvidia instead.
Right click on the Unity.exe icon (or shortcut)
Select -> Run with graphics processor -> High performance NVIDIA porcessor

Edit, maybe that was why my unity interface was also screwed up...
I had the same problem with unity 5.1.1f1. Because I just reinstalled my computer I did'nt instal windows 7 service pack 1 yet. When I installed it, it fixed the problem.
In my case unity has stopped working is because adware, this adware LavasoftTcpService64.dll, i remove it using adwcleaner and delete it in system32 here the reff site : http://answers.unity3d.com/page/troubleshooting.html
