Dynamic 2D Vapour Effect
I'd like some opinions on how to create an oozing vapour effect in Unity like the red injections from the periphery here.
One colleague suggested it's a 2D plane playing a fixed animation. Note though how it dynamically cuts and wafts in reaction to the player's fire, suggesting procedural logic each frame.
Shader magic, perhaps?

It's not an animation or shader effect - it's a "really intense fluid simulation" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroBot) developed by Josh Glazer (http://itp.usc.edu/faculty-staff/Joshua-Glazer/)
